Norman Woods Publishing LTD

For over 10 years, Norman Woods Publishing has specialised in dual-language books for EAL children. Founding director Carrie Norman, who was the principal of a Wisbech primary school at the time, had a high percentage of pupils with English as a second language. She was keen to offer these children and their families as much support as possible, making them feel welcome and helping them to participate in all aspects of school life without language being a barrier. She worked closely with Kate Woods, who is an experienced graphic designer who shares her love for children's books and writing to create a set of titles that were enthusiastically received by schools in the UK and overseas. These were launched under the BeeLingual UK imprint.

The list of titles has been extended to include books for pre-school children. Lucy McLintock joined the Norman Woods team in 2016, having spent three decades working in early years education.
With over 30 years’ experience in education, Carrie is currently Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy for the Brooke Weston Trust. She is developing NPQs for teacher development and is a visiting fellow for Ambition Institute, with a particular interest in closing the gap for vulnerable, disadvantaged and EAL children. This has resulted in Norman Woods Publishing extending its scope, and the launch of an additional imprint – the ‘Mighty Wordlings’. These titles are in English language and are designed to stimulate and support vocabulary acquisition. The first publication – The Exceptionally Bad Tooth Fairy – has received encouragingly positive feedback, and several further titles are in development, all designed at instilling a love of words and reading for all children including EAL pupils who are developing their proficiency in English.

Reviews

  • The BeeLingual books have bright, contemporary illustrations or photographs and simple text, and are designed to encourage children to speak and read their home language, so that they continue to develop their vocabulary, while learning new words and gaining confidence in speaking English.

  • I couldn't recommend this book enough...beautiful illustrations gave my child a real understanding of the 'tricky' words in the book. (The Mighty Wordlings series) My son didn't even realise he was building his vocabulary when reading this.
